Our first Regatta for points of the 2022 season was held on Saturday, April 16, at Oak Hollow Lake. Turnout was light probably due to the combination of it being a holiday weekend and the weather forecast. A total of 6 boats participated, 2 monohulls, 3 catamarans and 1 Hobie Tandem Island.

At the start of the race the wind was light so PRO Sue Cole set a short windward/leeward course and the first race was set for one lap. But during that first race the clouds dispersed, the sun came out and the winds picked up. The race committee measured winds up to 21 MPH. So the second and third races were 2 laps. Highest winds measured by the race committee for the day were 25 MPH. Wind gusts hampered some boats at times but fortunately there were no capsizes.

Congratulations to Rusty and Janet Phipps for winning all three races in the Monohull division and Chris and Mary Malcolm for winning all three races in the Multihull division!

Congratulations to all OHSC sailors who braved the uncertain conditions and huge thanks to our Race Committee and P.R.O.!

Learn to Sail in 2022! It Will Be the Experience of a Lifetime.

Sailing camps are open to all middle schoolers and above. We even allow a limited number of parents to join in the fun.

All camps run Monday through Friday, 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM each day. During the week, we teach students the basics of sailing including, sailboat basics, rigging, knot tying, how to capsize and right a sailboat, and how to sail both monohull and catamaran sailboats. Students wil learn through open-air classroom and hands-on sailing with experienced sailors. By the end of the week, they will be able to sail by themselves in light to medium winds.

To provide personal instruction we limit class size to 8 people. The video above will give you a good idea of what the classes will cover.

June 20 – 24th will include sailing and stand up paddleboarding (read more details below). Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday students will be given instruction in both sports. Wednesday will be all sailing. This class will be open to a maximum of 16 students.

Learn to Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP), June Camp Only!!

We’ll spend four days learning the basics of stand up paddle boarding on flat water. Topics covered in the class will be safety, equipment, rescue, and skills to get you out and enjoying SUP on your own.

We’ll teach and practice skills and incorporate games to help you improve your skills and have fun doing it!!

Saturday, November 13, was a beautiful day for sailing on Oak Hollow Lake. And a perfect day to take back the Neil Benson trophy!

OHSC hosted this year’s Interclub Regatta (2020 was cancelled), racing against sailors from Greensboro’s Lake Townsend Yacht Club. Relatively warm weather and higher winds than usual for Oak Hollow Lake, made for some exciting racing but thankfully, no capsizes. Fourteen boats competed in three, 2-lap races on a triangle course.

Congratulations to OHSC sailors! And a huge thanks to both clubs, our Race Committee and P.R.O., and to all who provided food, assistance, and support for this wonderful event!

Held Saturday, October 23, at Mark’s house, the bonfire potluck was a hit! Lots of excellent dishes, drinks and desserts. It was a great turnout, and fun getting together to share stories around the fire.

Also on this night, the Gunkhole Oar Award was passed on by last year’s winner, Michael Nordahl. For 2021, the Oar went to Mark Critzer! Congratulations, Mark!

Many thanks to Mark for hosting such a great event and keeping the bonfire going!

The Gunkhole fun regatta was held on Sunday, October 17th. Two multi-hulls, six monohulls, and one Tandem Island participated.

Winds were good but as usual for Oak Hollow Lake they were shifty and inconsistent resulting in some of our more experienced sailors having difficulties in some spots on the lake. Sometimes it’s the luck of being in the right spot on the lake at the right time.

Chris Malcolm and Curtis Crotts set the course using the approximate traditional locations and the mark towards Interstate 73 seemed to be the mark that caused the most problems for the sailors.

Congrats to Mark Critzer on his Tandem Island for taking the Oar which was passed on to him by last year’s winner, Michael Nordahl, at our Bonfire Social!
