Chilly Dipper Regatta

March 27 was our season opener, the Chilly Dipper Regatta, a no-points race. We finished three races on a triangle course. Thanks to our awesome Race Committee for the day, Dave Heap and Glenda Wilkinson! If anyone has more pictures, please email them. Submissions are always welcome!

Oak Hollow Sailing Club

The Oak Hollow Sailing Club was founded in 1974 by a group of enthusiastic sailors who had begun plying the waters of High Point, NC’s newly formed Oak Hollow Lake. The club has operated continuously since that time and helped many in the area to more fully enjoy one of mankind’s greatest sports pastimes – Sailing!

Today, the club operates from the North Marina, long known and originally set aside as the “Sailing Marina.” Members own and operate a wide variety of sailing vessels from small racing dingys and multi-hulls to mid-size cruising and pleasure sailboats. All share a passion for sailing.

Club regattas are held the 3rd Saturday of each month from April thru October. All regattas are mixed-fleet, handicapped races so each boat and each sailor can compete on a level basis. Year’s end participation trophies are awarded in both Mono-Hull and Multi-Hull classes. If you do not have a boat but would like to try sailboat racing – come on out! Someone is usually willing to have crew on their boat. This is a great way to learn the in’s and out’s of sailboat racing.

In addition, four additional club regatta events are held on a stand-alone basis. In March, the club holds it’s annual Multi-Hull regatta in order to take advantage of the type winds these boats are made for. This is usually the most “spirited” race of the year. Mono-Hulls are welcome too, of course! In November, the club enjoys the annual inter-club regatta with Greensboro’s Lake Townsend Yacht Club. This is highly competitive yet friendly racing. There are two “Gunkhole” regattas which allow the racers to choose their own course around the lake. The Gunkhole races are truly fun events suitable for newcomers or old pro’s.

The club hosts an annual community fun day in May. This provides an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in sailing to come out and see what the club and the sport is all about. In addition, club socials are held at various restaurants and pubs throughout the city each month of the year.

The Oak Hollow Sailing Club prides itself on being competitive without being overly intense – our focus is first and foremost to enjoy the wonderful sport of sailing. Whether you like to race or simply enjoy sailing in teh company of others, everyone is welcome and members go out of their way to help newcomers. If you already have the sailing bug, or think you’d like to explore it, please join us. We’d love to have you participate or help you get started. Do not hesitate to reach out to us with any questions you may have.

Gunkhole Regatta!

On Saturday, October 28, 2017, OHSC will hold its 1st Annual (?) Gunkhole Regatta. As previously emailed, this is meant to be a fun and more social type of opportunity for us to sail without the formality and normal rules of a regular-season regatta.

Details are attached with rules and a map showing the start/finish line and five marks that must be rounded (in whatever order you choose) in order to complete the regatta.

Important items:

  1. Bring your own stopwatch.
  2. We will NOT have a manned safety boat for this event.
  3. We are moving everything up one hour: Captains’ Meeting at 9:30 a.m., Regatta start no later than 10 a.m. For those of you that find that too early, please show up when you can and sail some with us anyway.
  4. We expect to eat around 1:30 to 2:00 p.m.
  5. Please sign up at the link below as to your intention to participate, and what food item you can bring (the club is furnishing hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, and condiments and water). We need items to complement that.
  6. If you can’t sail, we still want you to join the picnic, as this is our final sailing -oriented club event of the year.
  7. We will answer any questions you might have at the Captains’ Meeting, or you can ask via email.

Reminders:

  1. Sign up for this event at this link
  2. Reserve your seats for the November 18, Annual Banquet and Awards and plan to pay Linda Marsh next Saturday (check to Oak Hollow Sailing Club” or cash, $25 per person).  Go to the Nov. 18 tab at the link.
