OHSC April Regatta

IMG_20130420_131458OHSC kicked off its 2013 sailing season on Saturday, April 20th, with its first regatta of the season. A cool morning with about 10 mph winds (with heavier and frequent gusts) greeted 10 of our sailors. With the cold morning temperatures and still cold water temperatures, two boats opted not to sail, so we ran three races with 8 boats. Thanks to Leslie and Tait Humphries for the morning refreshments, and thank you to Kim Walker, Mark Benham and Paul Walter for serving on race committee.

Congratulations to Phil Andrews and Tait Humphries as race winners (Phil in races 1 and 2, and Tait in race 3) and to Warren Mitchell for consistent performances in all three races.

Thank you to all who came out today to support the club. Nancy, it was great to see you today after your week in Disney World with your grandchildren!

Next event will be our Open House at the City Marina on Tuesday, May 14th, at 6:30 p.m., where we invite interested folks to an Introduction to Sailing. All members are welcome to attend so we can answer questions from prospective sailors.

Thanks,

Paul Walter

2013 Open House & Fun Days

OHSC_ITS_2013To all Oak Hollow Sailing Club Members:

Attached please find the advertising information for our Open House and Fun Days (poster and club brochure) that will be placed at the marina and advertised around town in various locations. If you have any friends who are possibly interested in sailing, please forward this to them so they have the dates and times. The best advertisement for our club is “word-of-mouth” (or emails) from our members to their friends.

The Open House (on Tuesday, May 14, 6:30 p.m.) is a casual gathering intended to introduce anyone new (who is interested in sailing) to our club officers and members – we discuss the club briefly and introduce some basic sailing concepts in the Marina’s conference room. This is NOT a required meeting by any means – just an ice breaker for folks who are trying to decide if they want to sail, and/or join the sailing club. The Sunday, May 19, Fun Day will be the main day you will want to try to attend. It will be with our sailboats and members, and is a combination of introduction to sailing, actual sailing, fellowship, and refreshments. We have added another day like that to our events calendar this year which will be Saturday, June 22. Our plan is to use that day for a more formal training and teaching day for our new members who need instruction.

We hope to see you for any, or all of those events.

Thanks!

2013 Season Opening Ragatta

100_0475To all OHSC members:
We hope you are planning to get the 2013 Regatta season started with us this Saturday, April 20th. The most recent forecast is for an ideal sailing day for Saturday, with any rain clearing out during the overnight hours on Friday night, followed by sunny skies by mid-day on Saturday, with winds of 9 to 11 mph.
Race committee duties will be handled by Kim Walker, Mark Benham, and Paul Walter, and the Humphries have signed up for refreshments.
All sailors should have their boats rigged by 10:30 a.m., at which time we will hold the Captains’ Meeting. We will target first race starting time to be no later than 11:30 a.m., and if conditions permit we will hold three races.
We look forward to seeing you at the sailing marina (end of Waterview ) this Saturday.
Thanks,
Paul Walter

Sailing Marina gate Update..

To all Oak Hollow Sailing Club Members:

According to the City Marina, they plan to begin unlocking the gate to our sailing marina (on the weekends) beginning this Sunday, March 10th (corresponding to Daylight Savings Time).

Sunday’s forecast is for mid-60’s, so it should be a nice day to check on your boats, or maybe do some sailing.

Our first 2013 board meeting is set for next Wednesday, and we will post finalized event dates after the meeting. It is likely that our first formal regatta will be in mid-April.

Looking forward to seeing everyone soon!

Thanks!

OHSC 2013

DSCF4110To all OHSC Members:

We are a little over a month and a half away from getting our 2013 Season underway (first board meeting will be held on March 13, at which time we will set the schedule for the Season). Some of you have continued to sail during the winter, some of you have made boat purchases over the winter, and some are making plans for additional training this year. If the rest of you are like me, you are reading sailing articles, looking at (and dreaming about) other boats, and waiting for some suitable sailing weather and warmer water temperatures.

We are beginning our 2013 year with the addition of two new families to our club. Michael Dupont and his family joined us at the end of last year for the 2013 Season, and they own a Hunter 170. Also, Bob Bass and his family have joined us this year. Bob and Sharon and son, Stephen are members of Lake Townsend Yacht Club, as well, and they are looking to sail more frequently, and enjoyed our hospitality at the November Inter-club. Bob brings with him a Vagabond 14, and Stephen sails an Isotope catamaran. Sid Scott and his wife just recently purchased a Renken 18. We are thrilled to have some new sailors to begin the year and some new boats in the club!

Attached you will find the beginning OHSC member listing – we are starting with 52 member families on the roll, and 36 boats – a nice start to the year!

PLEASE BEGIN MAKING PLANS TO SEND IN YOUR 2013 DUES ($30 per family) AND SEND THEM TO: OHSC Treasurer, C/o Ann Eldred, 181 Spring Garden Circle, High Point, NC 27260. Try to have your dues paid as soon as possible – we hope to have everyone paid by March 31, 2013.

Our 2013 officers and board members as voted in at the November, 2012, Year-end Banquet are as follow:

Commodore: Paul Walter
1st Vice-Commodore: Jerry Eldred (also Webmaster)
2nd Vice-Commodore: Nancy Valego
Secretary: Melissa Palmer
Treasurer: Annie Eldred

Past Commodore: Warren MItchell

Board members: Michael Nordahl
Tait Humphries
Art Martz
Chuck Eldred
Connie Sloan
Linda Marsh

Our primary goal in 2013, as it is with every sailing season, is to “Promote and enjoy the sport of sailing”. We accomplish that by sharing our passion and knowledge of the sport among ourselves, and especially with others who want to learn about and enjoy sailing. We have a few new members from 2012, with whom we weren’t able to share some basic training (due to scheduling conflicts). A primary goal will be to help them get trained as early in the year as possible.

Our growth in membership has been wonderful during the past several years, and is a tribute to our following our mission of “promoting and enjoying”. To everyone of our members, please share the enjoyment of sailing with your friends and family who you think might enjoy it, and invite them to sail with us this year.

Following our March 13th board meeting we will send out an email with our 2013 schedule, and it will be posted on our website, www.ohsc.us. It is very likely we will continue to hold our regattas on the 3rd Saturday of each month, beginning in April, but we will confirm that at the board meeting, and will advise you all.

Looking forward to the 2013 Season, and seeing all of you!

Sincerely,

Paul Walter
