August Regatta
OHSC held its August Regatta on Saturday, August 16, 2014, with one of its best days of participation in many years. Twenty-one boats participated in the one “race” we were able to complete. The wind was a “no-show” and the Race Committee called the event after one very slow race.
We had a beautiful day and following the delicious spread of breakfast fruit and baked goods from Connie Sloan (thanks, Connie!), Phil Andrews provided a short workshop on “How to improve your starts” in a regatta race. If we had had any reasonable amount of wind we could have better practiced what Phil taught, but the light winds did manage to keep all the boats bunched together for most of the race.
Congratulations to our top three finishers Phil Andrews, Stephanie DeLair, and Dave Heap, and to the other 18 boats who survived the “float”.
Thank you very much to the following folks:
Connie Sloan: for the wonderful breakfast
Phil Andrews: for teaching the workshop
Rosalie Austin: for being on site to sell and take orders for our apparel items
Tom Kirkman: for his donation of time and materials and the new marker buoys (which we can now see from as far away as Winston-Salem)
Les Eger, Art Hudgins, Carrie and Billy Clemmer for handling RC duties.
Full race results are posted with handicap scoring.
August Regatta !
Oak Hollow Sailing Club will be holding its August Regatta this Saturday, August 16th, at the North Marina, with Captains’ Meeting scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
All sailors who plan to sail should have their boats rigged BEFORE the meeting begins. Race committee duties are being handled by Les Eger, Art Hudgins, and Billy and Carrie Clemmer. We will have morning refreshments prior to the meeting, so we can gather and talk about the wind (and perhaps whip some up).
The forecast is for a beautiful day with a significant change of wind direction (nothing new about that) during our race hours.
If you plan to sail, please go to the below link to our Scratch Sheet and sign up. Also, there is a column to sign up for anyone who would like to crew. Also, for members without boats, the club has a Sunfish available for rent (and the City Marina has several for rent), if you are trained and want to captain your own boat. Please contact me if interested in the club Sunfish. The club Harpoon has already been reserved for the day.
Hope to see you all there.
Thanks, and bring some wind!

Blue Chips Charity Regatta
On Saturday, July 26, 2014, Oak Hollow Sailing Club members, family, friends and guests gathered for the club’s First Annual Blue Chips Charity Regatta, in memory of Nancy Valego, who was a founding and lifetime member of the club and who passed away a year ago from pancreatic cancer. Nancy’s dedication to OHSC and to the sport of sailing exemplified Oak Hollow Sailing Club’s mission of “promoting and enjoying the sport of sailing”. She is missed every day and every event that we hold. It is a wonderful remembrance of Nancy that her beloved Vagabond 14, “Blue Chips” remains in our club and continues to sail with us under the ownership and captaining of Melissa Palmer. Although Melissa is sailing “Blue Chips”, we still see Nancy aboard.
For many of our new members who did not know Nancy, her service to the club resulted in our ongoing commitment to teaching sailing. She was responsible for establishing OHSC as the educators for High Point University’s sailing class. That teaching arrangement has provided the club with the opportunity to keep our dues affordable, and keeps us in an ideal position to share our love and knowledge of sailing with young people who may make it a lifelong hobby. What better way to promote our sport!
The club’s board, when establishing this event, also decided to make it a charitable event, by requesting donations toward cancer research. Two cancer research organizations were selected for donations, a local organization, the Susan Komen Foundation, which Nancy had supported, and a pancreatic cancer research organization, the Lustgarten Foundation. Linda Marsh designed a beautiful tee shirt for the event and Rosalie Austin had them printed. The proceeds from the sale of the shirts will also be contributed to cancer research.
The turnout for the event was fantastic! We had 19 boats who participated in the event with 30 captains and crew, and with the addition of family, friends and guests, we easily had double that total who joined the celebration. There was a lot of planning, organization, and work put into the day to make it such a success. Special thanks to Linda Marsh, Connie Sloan, Rosalie Austin, Melissa Palmer, and Carol Eldred for ALL their hard work! Thank you to all who showed up to participate, honor Nancy’s memory, and donate to such a worthy cause.
Sincerely,
Paul Walter

July Results and Photos Posted
Oak Hollow Sailing Club held its July 2014 Regatta on Saturday, July 19th, under cloudy and basically windless skies. We had a great turnout, with 14 boats competing in at least one of the two “races”. Congratulations to Phil Andrews for his two First Place finishes, to Michael Nordahl and Stephanie Delair for their two top three finishes, and to Gene Eldred for his two top four finishes. Full Results and handicap scoring are attached.
Thank you to Connie and Jerry for the morning refreshments, to Henry Dorn for the barbecue and for his help improving the rigging of the club’s Sunfish, and to Warren, Anna, and Kim Walker for handling race committee duties. Thank you to all who participated, as we had about 30 of our members present.
Don’t forget our “Blue Chips Charity Regatta” next Saturday to honor Nancy Valego’s memory and to benefit cancer research.
Sincerely,
Paul Walter
