October 2013 Pumpkin Regatta

Oak Hollow Sailing Club held its final regular season regatta on Saturday, October 19th, under cloudy skies and light winds. 25 members participated in the activities, with 13 boats sailing in at least one of the three races.

Thank you to Connie Sloan for her wonderful baked goods, coffee and refreshments prior to the races, and to the Eldreds for organizing the “Pumpkin Race” details. Race Committee duties were handled by Michael Nordahl, Phil Andrews and Joe Holder – thanks guys! Thanks to Tom Kirkman for providing the race committee with his “patented” floating clipboard with water proof time sheets. (Race results have been known to blow into the lake before).

Congratulations to race winners Dave Heap (our guest with the very beautiful wooden British-built (National 12 ?)), Warren Mitchell and Ken Irgen, and Melissa Palmer and Rosalie Austin who won the “Pumpkin Race”. Great sailing, ladies and gentlemen!

Thanks to all for a great final club regatta for 2013! Let’s begin preparations for the Inter-Club on November 9th at Lake Townsend, and don’t forget the Camp and Sail next weekend at Jordan Lake!

OHSC October 19th Regatta – Pumpkin Race

Our final regatta of the year on October 19th, will have an added element to it:

Before returning to the dock following the final race, there will be pumpkins with each captain’s name (or an assigned number) floating in an area on the lake – each boat should find and retrieve its pumpkin, and we will have a pumpkin carving contest back on shore.

On the day of the regatta please bring with you whatever pumpkin carving tools and decorations you will require to design your orange masterpieces.

The finished jack-o-lanterns will be scored on original design between 1 and 10 by all participants to determine a winner.

September 2013 Regatta

Twenty-five members, six High Point University sailing students, and several guests attended the OHSC September 2013 Regatta on Saturday, September 21.

Eighteen boats sailed in at least two of the three races. Race committee duties were handled by Warren Mitchell and Anna and Tom Kirkman, with Paul Walter handling safety boat duties for the HPU students who sailed in the first two races. Connie Sloan provided the morning refreshments before hopping on the Aquacat for racing.

Thank you to the volunteers! The RC committee did a very nice job of moving the three races along in order for us to complete the regatta before the bad weather arrived, and the refreshments were great!

Congratulations to race winners Phil Andrews (winner of Races 1 and 3) and Michael Nordahl (Race 2 winner). It was great to see Nancy Valego’s “Blue Chips” Hobie 1 on the water in the hands of new owner, Melissa Palmer and her crew, Rosalie Austin.

August 2013 Regatta

Oak Hollow Sailing Club held its August 2013 Regatta today under rainy skies and average winds of 9 to 10 mph. We had twelve member families present, five of whom decided to race in the rainy and gusty conditions. Andy Squint, Art Hudgins, and Tom Kirkman handled Race Committee duties, and Connie Sloan provided our morning refreshments. Thank you to those volunteers!

We were pleased to have several guests, all of whom decided to crew during the races. David Roletter and his daughter, Abby, came to visit us from Winston-Salem, member David Jones brought two Young Life members from High Point, Charles and Mack, and member Mike DuPont sailed with his daughter, Kristin,from Ohio, and one of his work colleagues, Sharon Harwood, from England.

We were able to complete three races with only a moderate amount of showers. Congratulations to race winners Michael Nordahl and his crew, Charles, who won Races 1 and 2, and to Paul Walter, with crew Stepanie and Abby who won Race 3. Times and results are attached.

Saturday, Sept. 21: September Regatta (HPU class to join us – need volunteers at the City Marina around 9:30 to 10 a.m. to help oversee Sunfish setup)

Saturday, Oct. 5: HPU Sailing Class (this date is for potential make-up time if needed)*

*For each Saturday listed above for HPU Sailing Class, we will need a few club members to help oversee Sunfish set-ups, assist with launches, and to man the john boat while the students are on the water. I will prepare a signup sheet to get volunteers and will send it out. The HPU Class helps fund our club’s budget which keeps our membership dues low. Please try to assist during some of these dates.
