Oak Hollow Sailing Club held its June Regatta on June 18, 2016, with beautiful sailing conditions. The regatta was attended by 36 members, with guests Rodney Joslin and Phillip Coley as crew for Mike Nordahl and Art Hudgins respectively. Winds ranged from 9 to 15 mph with stronger gusts. Thirteen boats had registered to participate, but due to a combination of wind conditions and equipment problems, only eight boats sailed in the races. Although there were some close calls during the regatta, there were no capsizes.
Thank you to all our volunteers on Saturday. They were as follow:
Apparel Sales: Rosalie Austin, Sue Cole
Race Committee: PRO: Mike Mullins
Course set-up assistance: Tom Kirkman
Safety Boats: Jerry Eldred, Gene Eldred, Karla Duperault
Roger Bates, Bruce Leigh
Signal Boat: Allison Mullins, Dari Starkey, Dave Blair
Captains meeting was held at 10:30 a.m., and was handled by Linda Marsh, who welcomed the group and recognized our guests. In consideration that winds were expected to be double-digit with significant gusts, Phil Andrews held a short demonstration for all (using his Laser as a visual aid) on the running rigging changes that could and should be made on higher wind days (outhaul, downhaul, and boom vang adjustments). Thank you, Phil! No capsizes, so everyone apparently listened. PRO, Mike Mullins covered course set-up and starting sequences and sent the sailors out for the regatta.
We had two sailors who made their racing debuts on Saturday. Chuck Starkey captained his family’s Harpoon 4.6, with Gary Gooden as crew, and Bill Inmon captained his American 14.6 with Les Eger as crew. Congratulations for getting out there, Chuck and Bill! We hope you enjoyed the experience and learned a lot about your respective boats under the conditions we had. Thank you Gary and Les for crewing!
Also, please remember our Sailing Social for June, scheduled for this Thursday, June 23, at 6 pm, at Ham’s Restaurant at the Palladium in High Point.
Finally, VERY IMPORTANT!!! Our Blue Chips Charity Regatta in memory of Nancy Valego (to benefit Cancer Research), is scheduled for Saturday, July 16th. You will be receiving information about the event this week. Make sure to note the starting times will be moved an hour earlier than normal (due to the City of High Point making a shelter booking error). Captains’ Meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. for that event.
